How UK income tax works in 2025/26
Understanding how income tax, National Insurance, and pension contributions interact is key to maximising your take-home pay.
Income tax bands
The UK personal allowance is £12,570 — the first £12,570 of your salary is tax-free. Income between £12,570 and £50,270 is taxed at 20% (basic rate). Income between £50,270 and £125,140 is taxed at 40% (higher rate). Income above £125,140 is taxed at 45% (additional rate). Scottish taxpayers have six different bands set by the Scottish Parliament, ranging from 19% to 48%.
National Insurance
Employee National Insurance is separate from income tax. In 2025/26, you pay 8% NI on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and just 2% above £50,270. There is no NI on the first £12,570. Once you reach State Pension age (currently 66), you stop paying National Insurance entirely. From April 2025, employer NI increased to 15% on earnings above £5,000.
Pension contributions
Salary sacrifice pension contributions are deducted before both income tax and National Insurance, making them highly tax-efficient. A higher-rate taxpayer putting £1,000 into salary sacrifice saves £400 in income tax and £80 in NI — the pension contribution effectively costs just £520. The 2025/26 pension annual allowance is £60,000 per year.
